Silhouettes: how to

After numerous people at the New York International Gift Fair asked us how we made our inspired silhouette display, we wanted to share our method for creating it. We mounted our portraits to paper covered boxes, but you could easily frame yours for a more formal and archival end result. Here are the instructions to make your own silhouette in six easy steps.

SUPPLIES:
Camera
Printer
Pencil
Ruler
Scissors
Exacto knife & cutting mat
Text weight printer paper
Cream heavy weight card stock
S&G Wrap for background
Box to mount background & silhouette
Map pins
Double stick foam tape
3M Command strips

1. TAKE A PROFILE PHOTO
Take a photograph of what you want to turn into a silhouette. We are using a profile shot of our friend Cecily. To make the silhouette stand out, exaggerate different facial features like eyelashes and lips, and even the hairstyle.

2. PRINT & CUT PHOTO TEMPLATE
Print out your photo at a desired scale. We are using an 11×17 inch sheet of paper for this silhouette. The whole process will be a little bit easier if you use a heavier weight paper. Next, cut out your photo. It helps to use an exacto knife for areas with lots of details.
*If the paper you are using for your final silhouette is light enough in color to print a photo on, and heavy enough in weight that the photo doesn’t bleed through to the other side, than you can flip it over and use the reverse side as your final silhouette; bypassing step #3!

3. TRACE & CUT SILHOUETTE
Use your cut photo as a template to trace your silhouette. You can use any type of paper, we used classic cream, but any color would work. Before you trace, determine which way you want the silhouette to face, and put a small piece of tape in the center of the back of the silhouette so that it doesn’t slip.

4. PREPARE THE BACKGROUND
Choose your background paper, and cut it down to your desired size. We used our Midnight Cherry Blossom wrapping paper.

5. COMPOSE & MOUNT
The final step to complete your silhouette is quite simple. Take your desired background paper and pin the corners to a box of the same dimensions. Next use the double sided foam tape to mount the silhouette to the background paper.

6. HANG & ENJOY
For a semi permanent display we recommend using 3M Command strips and a level helps! Hang box on wall, step back and enjoy!
