December is a fun time for mail, don’t you agree? Each day the warm wishes and precious photos that arrive tucked inside hand written envelopes pleasantly overshadow the bills, the catalogs and other solicitations. It’s mighty nice. It’s my time of year.
I always plan to dream up some fanciful new way to display the cards we receive, but usually default to a vintage potato chip rack (it is covered with clips and stands nearly two feet tall) and rest it on the dresser in our front hall. There it stays well after the tree has come down and the new year has settled in. Inevitably something has to be done with the cards, and it is always a little painful to discard all the glad tidings. So last year I turned to this simple way to reuse and enjoy all the pretty pictures and seasonal graphics for many Christmases to come.
Making paper ornaments out of greeting cards in nothing new, but I like this one for its simplicity and kid friendly approach. I used a large punch that I got here, but you could just as easily cut out tidy circles by tracing around a juice glass. You might try using cookie cutters as stencils to create fun seasonal shapes for something a little different, too. Butcher’s twine attached to the backs with a one inch circle sticker is a simple alternative to hole punching and bow tying and easy for little ones to do, but the options are really endless. Whatever you do, I think it looks best when you keep either the size or shape uniform, as well as the ribbon or string you use.
